“If you don’t know where you are going. How can you expect to get there?”

Basil S. Walsh

Starting a project by definition is always a bit challenging, especially at the start. The biggest hurdle can be where to start because a pre-requisite to a project is the fact that a lot of work is typically involved.

The biggest mistake therefore a person can make when starting a project is not planning its structure and the timeframe. I know that as a law student, I struggled to picture everything that I needed to do in order to finish a project and the timeframe I could do this all in.

Hence, I decided to see how Notion could streamline this process and make it run more smoothly. Here is what I came up with:

  • Breaking down projects into smaller tasks: Doing this helped me avoid procrastinating and delaying the work I needed to do to progress my project since it felt more achievable in a small amount of time.
  • Keeping track of the time I spent on a project task and assigning myself deadlines to complete them by: It's difficult to have a clear idea of how long a project can take, but it is a lot easier to simply try and give yourself a target to work to with each task since there is likely to be several.
  • Having a list view for my daily project task(s): Similar to how you might have a daily task database for something else on Notion, on this project's dashboard, I've created a view of tasks that I have assigned a deadline that is due that day and organised them by the priority I've given them (High > Medium > Low).
